What is an Optometrist?

Did you know that your Doctor of Optometry has as much education and training as your general practitioner or dentist? Dr. McDougall, Dr. Reinders and Dr. Wagner all earned Bachelor of Science degrees before completing their four year Doctor of Optometry degrees.

Doctors of Optometry are primary healthcare providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment (prescribing), management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye and associated structures, as well as the diagnosis of ocular manifestations of systemic disease. You do not need a referral from your family doctor in order to have an eye examination.

What happens at my eye examination?

When you come to our office, one of our Optometric Assistants will take a thorough individual and family eye health, vision and medical history, and gather computerized eye measurements prior to seeing the doctor. Dr. McDougall, Dr. Reinders or Dr. Wagner will provide a comprehensive eye examination to assess your vision and eye health status. The results will be reviewed along with your current vision needs and health history, your lifestyle, career and hobbies, in order to recommend your best vision care options.

We not only take our various test results into consideration when we discuss treatment options, but we listen to your concerns and ensure your eyes are not only healthy but are comfortable and working to their maximum potential.

Do I have coverage for my eye exam?

You may still have full or partial coverage for an eye exam through MSP if you are under 19, over 65, have an eye disease, have a systemic disease like diabetes that can affect eye health, or have a very high spectacle prescription. Most extended medical plans also cover all or part of your exam.

Low Vision Services

Some people are unable to see well, despite the use of glasses or contact lenses, because of damage from eye disease, trauma, or birth defects.  Special magnifiers, telescopic or other specially adapted glasses, and other devices can assist in improving visual function. Such services are available at this office either directly through our doctors or through appropriate referrals to rehabilitative agencies such as the CNIB.
